There is some overlap, as we enjoy a number of genres, but it doesn't always work out for the best. We All Want Different ThingsĪs Reviews Editor, it's generally my job here at USgamer to align our limited resources - we're only five people - with the wide variety of games launching every month. That allows you, in the case of a review or preview, to provide an informed perspective on a game, which is useful given that many sites cater to an enthusiast readership.Īlready though, you run into a few snags and issues. If you're covering Street Fighter V, I'd prefer you to have some understanding of fighting games as whole and the Street Fighter franchise in particular. I think that a games journalist and critic should have at least some facility with the title they're covering, especially in the case of a review, which is where my focus lies as review editor. Honestly, I lean on the "Yes" side of that answer. It's one of those arguments that we've had before and will have again, because it's a pertinent question: Should games journalists be good at the video games they cover? This video has reignited an argument that sits as one of the pillars of the gaming community. I'm sure given the option GamesBeat would've sent someone else to play Cuphead - Takahashi admits his faults when it comes to play - but that was what they had to work with. Things doesn't always line up and allow your site to connect up your best resources with a publisher's or developer's title. They had an appointment to see the game, Takahashi was the man onsite, and you see the result. So, the Cuphead impressions are based on limited resources. We here at USgamer generally have to subsist on a single person per conference, with the exception of Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Not every outlet has the resources to send a whole team. That's an editorial decision, probably based on getting more quotes, interviews, and business-centric coverage from the show than previews and hands-on impressions. On GamesBeat's small team - they're larger than we are, but I believe their total editorial team tops out at 10 people - Takahashi happened to be one of the few (only?) sent to Gamescom to cover the event. The video hurts me as a player, but the error attributing the game to Super Meat Boy's developers is the bigger problem as a journalist, one GamesBeat has since corrected in an editor's note. That's his job, and it's one he does well. He is well-versed in the gaming industry, able to write and report on the trends of that industry. It doesn't matter if the genre is not one you're well experienced in, if you're an experienced gamer then a straightforward tutorial shouldn't trip you up, at least not for more than a few seconds.Dean Takahashi is a primarily a reporter on the business side of games. The issue was so inexplicably bad at it that he struggled to get past a tutorial that literally spelled out what he was supposed to be doing. The issue isn't that he was bad at a game. Maybe this particular incident is taking that to a bit of an extreme, but again, this was never a real review, so. Doesn't mean games need to be easy, hard can certainly be fun, but really I think it's the people of average (or even below average) skill that are best qualified to make that decision. If they're not having fun, the game won't do well (mostly, exceptions exist of course). Sometimes, that's actually how it SHOULD be.games are made for the masses, and the masses kind of suck. Matt is me wrote: ↑ 3 years agoI still don't really get why people are so mad that someone who reviews other games for a living was bad at one game. I still don't really get why people are so mad that someone who reviews other games for a living was bad at one game. An actual, formal review with breakdowns and scores was written on that site by someone else after the game had come out. But him playing, recording, and writing a blurb was always meant to be just for fun, and the video was meant to be funny. Yes, he calls the game hard-it certainly was hard for him. The "review" he wrote (if you can even call it that, it was a brief article for the demo) is entirely positive towards the game and talks about how shameful his skill level is. He knew they weren't his thing, and played more or less as a joke. Keep in mind, this guy has reviewed video games before.

In both the Iliad and the Odyssey Homer writes of the Greek gods as if his readers are already familiar with them and know their backstories. Homer's writings seem to be part of an even older poetic and mythological tradition. Rather than being a purely historical account, Homer's recounting paints the war as both a human and divine one, with both gods and mortals on either side. His epic poems recount the events during Trojan war. Even though he is well known in the modern-day for his epic poems, little is known about Homer's life. The first of these are the epic poems the Iliad and the Odyssey written by Homer, a greek poet who resided in what is now modern-day Turkey. The earliest written sources of Greek mythology come in the form of epic poetry from the 8th century BCE. In spite of the fact that the religion and culture that birthed this lively cast of characters has long since faded into the mists of history, their influence can still be strongly felt to this day within Western culture. With it's grandiose cast of memorable characters- from all-powerful, yet highly flawed, deities such as Zeus- to the brave, but often tragic, heroes such as Achilleus- to the many horrifying, larger-than-life monsters such as the Hydra- Greek mythology has everything needed to stimulate the imagination and promote both intrigue and wonder. When most people think about mythology today, it is often Greek mythology that comes to mind. Greek mythology is the study of the body of myths found within ancient Greek religion.
